Meet Elsie the PAT Dog...

Elsie the PAT Dog

Many children seem naturally comfortable in the presence of dogs. Parents and teachers can use this special relationship to enhance literacy skills and encourage reading in a relaxed environment, with dog and child sitting together. This contact between dog and child encourages physical interaction which helps to put the child at ease. The dog acts as a non-judgemental listener and offers comfort to the child who may find reading difficult or stressful. On average over 6000 children per week, across the country, benefit from this unique experience and the results are outstanding.

Our Values this month are...

Gentleness & Joy

St John's Values....

At St John's we endeavour to promote a variety of beliefs and cultures, all underpinned through our Christian ethos, which reflects the diverse nature of British society. Our curriculum is enriched through visits celebrating British values such as the trip to the National Arboretum at Alrewas, and celebrating our Queen becoming the country's longest reigning monarch and a thoughtful and reflective remembrance service - all which have also supported the learning in the classroom.

We have a democratic process by annually electing school council representatives, who in time have a pupil voice on issues such as healthy eating/living, extracurricular provision and any subject they feel important.

Holidays during Term Time

"Headteachers continue to have the power to authorise leave of absence, but only in exceptional circumstances. While family holidays are enriching experiences, the school year is designed to give families the opportunity for these breaks without having to disrupt their children’s education. It is for schools to consider the specific details and relevant context behind each request".

Nick Gibb MP

If parents feel that exceptional circumstances do apply, they should put this in writing to the Head teacher, giving at least 15 working days notice. The Head teacher will consider each such request separately and independently.
