Primary School PE and Sports Funding

Primary School PE and Sports Funding

Since November 2013 we have received £48,510 due to the government ‘Primary school PE and sports funding'. This has been spent on new equipment for all multi-sports, which will increase and enhance our provision delivered by our staff.

We have spent additional funds developing our own staff, especially Mr Judd, who has worked closely with Streetly Academy is leading all P.E. and games lessons throughout the school. He has delivered  training to staff including Skills to Achieve and Maths of the Day and also works alongside other staff throughout the school to team teach and as part of continued professional development.

Maths of the Day is an online resource program for use within primary schools, which uses P.E. and Active Learning as a vehicle to raise attainment in mathematics.

All staff members are trained in the following areas:

  • how to structure the lesson from start to finish
  • how to plan a Gymnastics lesson
  • how to assess the children in Gymnastics
  • how to enable children to work together whilst performing different shapes
  • the four main jumps, rolls and balances when delivering Gymnastics
  • how to create flowing sequences
  • how to differentiate with the different ability levels in the class
  • health and safety
  • how to use equipment in Gymnastics

A leading and experienced PE practitioner will be working alongside our subject leader to increase the provision of extra-curricular activities and the effectiveness of our assessment.

Impact of the P.E. Funding

During the summer term we were awarded the Gold Mark for School games and were recognised and awarded by Streetly Academy for our provision of P.E and sports in the Primary environment.

We have increased participation rates in extra-curricular activities with a range of activities, sports and clubs. Funding is made available for children from disadvantaged families to participate in extra-curricular sports.

In competitive sports we have been successful across many competitions including;

  • Tag Rugby - Walsall representatives at the Black Country Games
  • Walsall runners up in sports hall athletics
  • Year 3/4 Football winners

Swimming provision has been extended to Key Stage 1 so that we can meet our aim of all children being able to swim by the end of Key Stage 2.

We are fortunate to have a lockable cycle and scooter shelter and urge as many children as possible to travel to school on bikes and scooters safely.  Whilst the older children receive training on bikes through the 'Bikeability' scheme, the younger children are given 'Scootability' training where they learn to scoot safely.

We participate in the A* Stars Programme which encourages active sustainable road safety and travel.  We offer many activities to the children throughout the year which includes learning to cross roads safely through pedestrian training, be bright be seen, car safety awareness, and speed awareness.  We are very conscious of the volume of traffic around the school before and after school and encourage safe walking  through different initiatives such as walk to school week and road safety awareness lessons.

This year, for the first time, we have  been able to take part in gymnasium displays, which the children really enjoyed.

St John’s CE Primary School recognises the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. Through Streetly Academy our staff have received training on on health and well-being throughout the year resulting in a healthy lifestyle club being set up. In addition, it is considered that an outstanding PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of the children.

PLUS

Since September 2015 we have been buying into the Streetly Federation Network. This has given the opportunity for more children to participate in competitive inter-school sports. More emphasis this year will be placed on younger children competing (from Year 1).

Streetly also offer a range of continued professional development (CPD) opportunities with PE specialists delivering to all staff and working alongside our PE/Sports leader.

Additionally we have increased our provision of swimming to incorporate KS1 (infant) lessons for the summer term. We allocated funding to employ a qualified swimming coach on a casual basis. We feel strongly that swimming is a vital life skill that should be acquired as early as possible and quality lessons from a skilled practitioner will ensure our younger children make rapid progress.

This year 'Young Play Leaders' have been created and given roles of responsibility to develop and lead activities during lunchtimes. These children are given further roles within P.E. lessons they participate in.

With the increase in Sports Premium funding in September 2017 we have been able to employ Mr Greaves as a P.E. apprentice. Mr Greaves is a keen sportsman himself and excels in a wide range of sports. He will be offering a wide variety of sports both at play times and lunchtimes and, with our new staggered times, this will ensure that all children will have the opportunity to take part in organised and structured physical activities.
